Pre-bonsai Stages

We grow and rank our trees in stages. What does this mean?

The reference number looks like this with three digits : 0 0 0

  • The first digit signifies the root stage.

  • The second digit is the Primary Structure.

  • The third is the overall repotting status indicator.

If you get a tree with the reference 2 1 1 - it translates as:

  • the roots are in stage 2,

  • the taper is in stage 1,

  • And the repotting stage 1.

If I did a root prune fairly recently, and its not yet fully recovered, but you wish to purchase it, do you know what state its in or do you have to guess? Not anymore, we will tell you if it’s a good idea or not.

What are the stages?

Root

  1. Taproot removed—unknown quality.

  2. Previous root pruning work completed. Grown in a medium that fosters fibrous roots.

  3. A refined root system that is 50% or more filling its pot.

Structure

  1. Standard pruning for growth. No structural work.

  2. Primary branching or trunk chop. Some structural work.

  3. An initial styling to create basic structure and scale.

Can I repot this season?

  1. Ok, to do so at the right time.

  2. Not necessary; use discretion

  3. Not recommended for this season.
