The bonsai saibai was founded in 2021 in Wiltshire, UK.

We do not have a retail facility or public access on site.

The aim is to grow locally, increase pre-bonsai maturity, and supply bonsai enthusiasts with suitable materials.

We source material and work on it for thickness, nebari, root system, taper, ramification, scale, and other “bonsai” characteristics not typically found in traditional nursery stock.

We are constantly sourcing new starting material and working out ways to provide you with a better starting position.

Hardiness

We strive to harden off our trees to maximise their chances. We operate in a wet, windy and difficult spot for growing. The trees go through a lot while here. The strong make it.

Setbacks

Activities like repotting and trunk chopping can reduce the growth in the short term. We strive to conduct some of the necessary starting activities for you. When we remove the tree from the field, we then pot it and ensure it is healthy before selling it.

Age

We all know that the value of good bonsai comes from its age. Specific characteristics like bark, a branch-cut rollover, and fibrous roots only come with time. We are committed to getting age into the trees. This is why our stock will be limited in the first years of operation, to give time to growing trees.

Wiring

We wire trees using guy wire and standard wiring techniques. You may get wired trees when you purchase them, and in some species, the wire may even be embedded in the base of the trunk. Some wires may dig in and leave a bit of a scar.
Although we try to minimise scaring, please understand that wiring and scaring on young material is expected and sometimes even celebrated.
Although we mainly use the wire technique on our pines, we have also tried it on other species. If you do not like the wire, please check the photos well before purchase, as there are no returns because of the wiring process.

Pre-bonsai

We are committed to educating people on what is not bonsai or pre-bonsai. It is subjective, and many pre-bonsai trees are being sold as expensive bonsai to unexpecting people. It is sad to see that this even happens in some well-known and popular bonsai stores.

What is pre-bonsai?

We have created a basic page outlining some key points and what is pre-bonsai?
