prebonsai care guides

prebonsai is about growth

Bonsai trees should be treated by the stage of development you seek.

Prebonsai

Depending on the style of tree, the size of the pot you are aiming for, we tend to develop the tree for growth in the prebonsai stage.

We thicken trunks, we build a root system and we create primary branch structure. Since we don’t want to wait 100 years, we want to do this efficiently.

All tree species have different growth habits and there is a lot you can do, including placing it in the ground or putting it in a pot, heavily pruning the tree or leaving it to grow.

Prebonsai is all about letting the tree grow, but controlling what grows and for what purpose.

Bonsai

Once the fast-growing stage is over, it is time to refine. This may include slowing the tree down and controlling it more.

A tree in a small pot can grow weak, and has specific requirements.

You may need to let it grow to gain vigour every so often. Some even place it in a large pot to prevent the tree from being restricted unnecessarily when not going to a show.

Many bonsai trees do not look like the best version of themselves in the photograph or at a show, as a tree will not survive for too long if excessive constraints are continuously placed on the tree.
